Global climate leadership starts with cities.
That’s the message of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, which has produced a cool infographic illustrating its case here.
C40 is a global network of large cities “taking action to address climate change by developing and implementing policies and programs that generate measurable reductions in both greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks.” The group originated in October 2005, when London’s Mayor at the time, Ken Livingstone, called together people from 18 megacities to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
‘Big picture’ climate change issues tend to get lost in many urbanism discussions, which focus on livability and related characteristics. Obviously, a city is only ‘livable’ if it is compatible with our climate itself. Cities are efficient ways for people to live but as the C40 infographic points out, the shear size of our urban population means that climate action needs to include changes in urban environments.
